Let's save The Rotonda, Art Nouveau and Noucentista Building

How can we expect Barcelona to be known as the Capital of the Catalan Art Noveau (Modernisme) with a project such as Nuñez's Rotonda?

What happened to Barcelona, the city in which the inside-areas of the blocks? In the project, La Rotonda is going to have covered its inside-area!

No organisation recieving grants from the municipality dares to back us publicly and most media groups won't help us because they don't want to stand up against Núñez nor the municipality.

Since the ones in charge won't preserve la Rotonda, it is our duty, the citizens' of Barcelona and Catalonia to do so!

Demolishing 80% of the building must be due to the plans to build 5-floor underground parking lot.

What will international tourists think when looking for the Barcelona portrayed in the Shadow of the Wind come across Núñez's Rotonda?

The Rotonda, the old Hotel Metropolitan, is a modernist building (Catalan Art Nouveau) designed by the architect Adolf Ruiz y Casamitjana as a project for Salvador Andreu which was initiated in 1906 and completed in 1918. Shortly thereafter it was expanded by the architect Sagnier Villavecchia. It is one of the 115 important buildings of the Modernisme Tour of Barcelona.

Current Situation: The current plan, privately sponsored, and approved by the Barcelona authorities is to demolish 80 percent of the building, modifying radically the original size and the building volume.

The magnitude and design of the building is protected by the Special Plan of Architectural Heritage and Classification of District 5 established by its own municipal government which says:

1 .- Maintaining the original size of the building. Whichever alteration (is being considered) should not increase but reduce the area built on the top floor.

To approve a plan that doesn’t comply with the special Plan of Architectural Heritage and not to impose responsibility on the owner to maintain the protected building as the law requires.

Responsible Sponsor: NUÑEZ Y NAVARRO
The present sponsor, NUNEZ Y NAVARRO is responsible for the current, poor state of the building and does not perform any maintenance to justify a speculative operation.

What we are asking for?

This operation will be a disaster for this Art Nouveau building that is cast in a large compact mass with a kind of "Art Nouveau façade", a caricature of the building.

Currently the Rotonda is totally abandoned, a strategy that is designed for greater financial gain for an historical building. All of us want the rehabilitation, but we can’t permit this operation.

For that reason we are asking legitimately of the comprehensive rehabilitation respecting the essence of the building, by eliminating the additions and remounts, in this way, fulfilling the norms of the heritage of architectural protection.
